Standish Sportsman’s Association Annual Kids’ Fishing Derby

This special day is dedicated to the memory of Ernie and Edna McNevin.

Ernie was a long time member of Standish Sportsman’s Association and Edna was a special friend to many of us at Standish. In the fifties, Ernie was one of those beach buggy guys chasing stripers from the beaches of Cape Cod. Ernie had a love for fishing and the outdoors and it is fitting to honor Ernie and Edna in this way.

The Annual Kids’ Fishing Derby is held each year during the Massachusetts free fishing weekend.

The Derby will be held on a local pond where we will set up a tent for a weigh-in station. The club will supply coffee, donuts, bait and a few rods and reels for those who need them. And of course we will also supply knowledgeable fishing men and women from our ranks to give pointers on how to have a successful day of fishing.

At the end of each Derby we award trophies and hand out prizes to the kids and our hope is that each child has had a meaningful outdoor experience.
